Introduction to Peacock Butterfly

The First Walk

It is the year 2002 and my friend and I have just finished a charity walk for Cancer. We return to our local public house, The Bird in Hand, where I meet up with Jemima Stacey. Jemima is 11yrs old (now 15) and during our chat she tells me she would love to take part in a sponsored walk for Grandma Mouse. I gave it lots of thought and planned The Peacock Butterfly Walk 2002. The date was 2nd November; exactly 1 year to the day Jemima had lost her beloved Grandma Mouse to Breast Cancer. The walk was for 6 miles and as word spread 16 of us agreed to take on the challenge.

The day of the walk, and yes you've guessed it, the weather forecast rain, but everyone was in great spirits and the children were all singing as we walked along. Singing in the Rain, Yellow Brick Road and many more were sang out of tune but they certainly kept us all going. Wendy, Jemima's mother brought us all bottles of water, which were well appreciated.

Then the heavens opened and it rained and rained. We reached Preston and, of course, had to stop for a drink in the Red Lion public house. After a couple, we continued on our walk and finally finished at The Bird in Hand, Gosmore.

We raised £2,865 pounds which we gave to Breast Cancer Care. We will be doing a walk each year so if you want to combine a fun day out with getting fit please contact us - the more the merrier.

The Calendar

As the year went on I met Jim Stutley. Larking around I said he had a lovely bum and said I would like to photo it for a calendar - and that is how the Peacock Butterfly Calendar 2004 came about. At first not many volunteered their services (or posteriors!!) then every one wanted to be in the calendar and as a result family, friends and local business people have all taken part. The Calendar was launched at the Peacock Butterfly Auction on Friday 24th October, 2003 and the Charity was born soon after.

Since then we have raised money in a variety of ways including holding auction evenings and getting dressed up for different Balls. Apart from raising money from these events, we also have a lot of fun. Perhaps thats our moto - 'Cash for Cancer, Fun for All'. Let us know what you think especially if you have any other suggestions for the Peacock Butterfly Appeal.
